Consumerism Is An Epidemic
Have you ever felt that you’re living through a nightmare of consumption? That you wish you could un-hook yourself and reconnect with a life that is somehow more real and vivid? I know I have. Today we live in a time when there is little to no understanding of how the goods we consume and take for granted came into being. Without this we lack the knowledge to understand the true costs of our consumption, and the power to take action. As a result we have become disconnected. What is the fascination with having the next big thing? It seems we are consumed by our desires to have the biggest house, the newest car and the latest iPhone. Think about it, each time Apple launches a new iPhone, it’s a spectacle. Crowds cheer as they rush to stores in the eternal quest to obtain the latest and greatest gadget. But the blind fervor over Apple devices masks a darker aspect of iPhone mania: People go to truly desperate lengths to get their hands on one. Since the first iPhone shipped out in 2007, fans have gotten in fist fights, sold organs and even trafficked children in exchange for the devices. These are all true by the way. Others risked their own safety to recover lost phones. Robbers have killed just to make a buck feeding the iPhone black market. Americans are shelling out big bucks annually to outfit the entire household with Apple products. And they are spending hundreds – if not thousands of dollars – more each year for the unexpected Apple “taxes” — add-ons that lock them into the Apple system: iTunes downloads for music, movies and games, along with subscriptions and accessories. Kim Kardashian Wears a $19 Dress Under a Designer Coat
Ahhhh, made you look. Yes, Kim Kardashian has a closet that rivals most designer boutiques. But should we find it newsworthy that a reality TV star is wearing a dress she bought for less than $20. Is this the best news we can get? I mean there are a lot of things going on in this world. Does it need to concern us what Kim Kardashian is wearing? We are being distracted and this latest about Kim Kardashian among the different ways to grab our attention. “When we’re being bombarded with wall-to-wall news coverage and news cycles that change every few days, it’s difficult to stay focused on one thing—namely, holding the government accountable to abiding by the rule of law—and the powers-that-be understand this.” And while we all are caught up in the uproar over this year’s latest hullabaloo — we have neglected to see what is happening right before our eyes. We now have militarized police, we’ve allowed tanks on Main Street and nobody seems to be concerned of the increase in police related killings on Americas. In fact, how many Americans have largely forgotten last year’s hullabaloo over the NSA and government surveillance? Not only have we forgotten, we’re generally foggy about everything that has happened in between. Then again, so much has happened in the years since Edward Snowden first appeared on the scene that it’s understandable if the average American has a hard time keeping up with and remembering all of the “events,” manufactured or otherwise, which occur like clockwork and keep us distracted, deluded, amused, and insulated from the reality of the true American. You should be mad as hell that a police officer choked someone to death. Why aren’t you? Under these conditions there can be no thought. And, in fact, modern man does not think about current problems; he feels them. He reacts, but he does not understand them any more than he takes responsibility for them. He is even less capable of spotting any inconsistency between successive facts; man’s capacity to forget is unlimited. This is one of the most important and useful points for the propagandists, who can always be sure that a particular propaganda theme, statement, or event will be forgotten within a few weeks.” No so long ago, we were treated to Justin Bieber’s run-in with police after a bout of reckless driving, the FBI’s investigation into the leaking of celebrities’ nude photos, Brad and Angelina’s wedding,... read more

The world is coming to an End!
“Love is the most powerful weapon on the face of the earth. Robert Kennedy once said that few will have the greatness to be in history, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events … So yes, the world is coming to an end, and the path towards a new beginning starts, within you.” Despite the recent deluge of tragic news in places ranging from Gaza to Ferguson, this man’s powerful message will remind you that there is hope. In a video uploaded to YouTube, rapper Richard Williams, aka Prince Ea, gives us a rundown of various issues our generation is facing in his spoken word piece. He begins with the bold statement, “The world is coming to an end,” and proceeds to highlight key issues our generation is facing. “Presidents lie, politicians trick us,” he says. “Race is still an issue, and so is religion.” Though the picture he paints is bleak, he offers a very simple, yet truthful solution to the universe’s problems — love. He urges viewers to open their hearts, saying, “Once we truly love, we will meet anger with sympathy, hatred with compassion and cruelty with kindness.” Prince Ea’s words are more than just beautiful — they speak volumes.
